How To Shift

Basics of New Zealand Immigration Law:

Visas and Permits

There are various kinds of temporary and permanent visas and permits including for holiday, visitors, work, students, business, and family members.

A visa allows you to enter New Zealand, and a permit allows you to remain/stay in New Zealand.

Residence:

Residence permits allow a person to live in New Zealand on a permanent basis, and a Returning Residents visa allows them to leave and return.
Residence can be applied for under several different categories.

Citizenship:

If a person is granted residence they retain their original citizenship. However once a person has been a resident of New Zealand for a certain time period, he or she may apply for citizenship (and obtain a New Zealand passport).

The timeframe in which you must have held New Zealand residence for prior to an application for New Zealand Citizenship differs depending on your circumstances.
